FAQ

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is an event where problem solving is in focus. Participants work together in groups to find solutions to specific problems in a limited amount of time, often 24 or 48 hours. It is usually a competition, with a jury choosing the winning contribution.

Hackathons is one of the future design methods where you can benefit from peoples differences and work with problem solving in a fun, inspiring and transparent way. Way back, hackathons used to be for programmers and developers but are now used to find solutions for different kinds of problems, both within and outside tech.

What is Hack for Södertälje?
An online event for you who want to contribute to Södertälje’s development towards "The inclusive, sustainable and connected Södertälje." In concrete terms, this means you are a part of a team working together for 24 hours to solve the challenges in the competition and then submit your solution for assessment by the jury.

When is it?
From 5 February to 6 February, 2022.

Why Inclusive, Sustainable and Connected?
The theme for this hackathon originates from a project we at Södertälje municipality are running together with RISE (Research Institute of Sweden), Umeå University and Telge Återvinning. The project is financed by the strategic innovation program IoT Sverige which is funded by Vinnova, The Swedish energy agency and Formas. The funding is granted in the call “IoT for innovative societal benefits and a better life for all in an interconnected world”.

The theme - and name - of the project is the same as the theme for this hackathon - “The inclusive, sustainable and connected society”. The objective of the project is to develop IoT concepts to support Södertälje municipality in using machine generated data as a strategic resource for both internal efficiency and as a basis for democratization. Also, the purpose of the project is to develop data driven working methods for higher resource and cost efficiency in the work we do with resource and waste management, which is part of reaching our sustainability goals by 2030.

This hackathon is closely connected to the project, and we’re hoping that the outcomes of the hackathon can be a part of the project, which will finish in the spring of 2023. Our intention is to maximize the value of the output from the hackathon, to enable actual implementations and improvements within the service offering of Södertälje municipality.

Who can join?
Everyone over 16! We welcome all participants. The more perspectives the better.

We hope that you who live or work in Södertälje want to join, but of course you who do not work or live in Södertälje and who have other perspectives to contribute are also welcome.

The inclusive, sustainable and connected Södertälje is about society in a larger context, not only Södertalje municipality and other municipalities in Sweden but even of course globally. Which means we happily se other municipality’s and organizations engaging in our Hackathon – we can make each other better.

Development is a common process and this hackathon provides opportunities for new forms of interaction with different skills. Therefore, we also welcome you who, for example, are a supplier to Södertälje municipality or Science Park. You can contribute valuable knowledge and experience.

Do I need any special skills to join?
No special skills are required. The important thing is that you want to be involved. Hack for Södertälje is for you who want to develop your skills in problem solving, creativity and innovation and contribute to The inclusive, sustainable and connected Södertälje. With that said, since it's about working in groups with sustainable solutions for the future, you are welcome to be a curious team player with an interest in sustainability and digitalisation.

Is it only for hackers or developers?
No. Everyone over 16 is welcome and everyone has got good ideas that will take us forward. The more diverse group of participants the better!

I have no team, can I join anyway?
Sure! Many sign up without a team and then either find their team themselves in our hacking platform when we're getting closer to the hack, or get matched by us.

How many can we be in a team?
You can be as many or as few as you want, but we recommend a team size of 3-8 people.

What equipment do I need?
A computer and wifi, that's it!

Do I need to be active all of the time, even during the night?
It is entirely up to you and your team how you use the time.

Is there a fee?
No, it's free to participate.

Who owns the outcomes of the hackathon?

Ideas, prototypes, services or other material produced during the event and included in the competition are owned by the authors themselves. We encourage sharing code, thoughts and ideas and doing so open source through an MIT license or creative commons, but this is not a requirement.

Vad är Hack for Södertälje?
